The largest pieces of debris were a four-foot wide cylinder, which emitted a vapour. Perry noted most of the debris seemed to be very small, about two to five inches in size. Texas Governor Rick Perry said Columbia had left an "extraordinary debris field" stretching from the Dallas area northward to the Arkansas border and eastward to Alexandra. Search teams scoured a 400 km area, stretching upto Arizona on the West and New Mexico on the East of Texas, for the remains and the debris that hurtled down from the disintegrated Space Shuttle Columbia. Along with the remains, an intact mission patch, with the names of the seven Columbia crew membes was also discovered. Sabine county sheriff Tom Maddox said "several remains have been found." He, however, did not elaborate. CNN television earlier showed images of a hearse funeral vehicle in a field in Hemphill with investigators standing nearby. The remains have been sent for DNA testing, a BBC report said. Body parts believed to be from the astronauts have been recovered near Hemphill in eastern Texas, along with a helmet and uniform badges. A hospital employee on his way to work reported finding of a what appeared to be charred torso, thigh bone on a rural road. Two young boys were reported to have found a charred human leg on their farm in Sabine county. "I can confirm human remains from the space shuttle Columbia have been found in the debris," in Hemphill, about 180 miles from Dallas where a lot of twisted metal from Columbia have been found, a spokesman of the local Police said but gave no details. WASHINGTON: Human remains, believed to be those of the seven astronauts on board the ill-fated shuttle Columbia have been located in Texas and Louisiana, even as investigators struggled to establish the cause of the breakup of the spacecraft which disintegrated minutes before its landing.
